City of Ottawa Supports Vitesse’s Biotech Program
(July 29, 2004, Ottawa, ON) - Vitesse Re-SkillingTM Canada Inc. recently signed an agreement with the City of Ottawa, to support internationally trained professionals interested in participating in the Vitesse Biotechnology Bridging Program for Internationally Trained Professionals (VBP-ITP). The City of Ottawa will provide $5,000 to eligible candidates. Vitesse is an independent, not-for-profit organization, created by the National Research Council (NRC), University of Ottawa and Carleton University. Since 1996, Vitesse has re-skilledTM over 600 scientists and engineers into software engineering, photonics, biophotonics, DNA technology, bioinformatics, and microelectronics fields. The success of the Vitesse model lies in our ability to bring career-oriented professionals, educators and industry partners together and collaboratively shape cost-effective training solutions. The VBP-ITP is a first-of-its-kind job training strategy that aims to bridge internationally trained Canadian professionals with biotechnology companies and research groups that need scientists or technicians with expertise in biotechnology. Using our approach, biotechnology and related employers can identify highly educated, motivated personnel with minimal learning curves – helping employers meet their milestones quicker, easier and with minimal risk. The program consists of a soft skills and technical communications component and an academic component, which involves one or two academic semesters at local colleges and universities. Participants will also receive Canadian work experience either through hands-on labs or a possible work-term with a local life sciences or biotech company.
