Vitesse Pushes the Boundaries of Biophotonics Field in Canada
OTTAWA, February 24, 2004 - Vitesse's Program Manager in Photonics and Biophotonics, Dr. Stoyan Tanev, has co-authored an article in the January 2004 issue of the journal Laser Focus World, titled, "Simulation Tools Solve Light-Scatering Problems from Biological Cells". The other co-authors are: Dr. Wenbo Sun, a research assistant professor at the Center for Atmospheric Sciences of Hampton University; Dr. Richard Zhang, a research scientist at Optiwave Corporation; and Dr. Andrew Ridsdale, the group leader of the Confocal Microscopy, Image Data Analysis, and Visualization group at the Ottawa Health Research Institute.

Highlights of Other Vitesse Biophotonics Initiatives Include:
The first course in biophotonics simulation tools in Canada (February 2003).
The first Canadian Biophotonics Primer & Workshop (November 2003) - BioLIGHT 2003, in partnership with the Canadian Institute for Photonics Innovations. A total of 110 participants from industry, academia and government attended this 3-day workshop, which featured talks by 22 speakers, all outstanding and internationally recognized Canadian and US experts in medicine, biology, physics, photonics and biomedical engineering.
The first Interdisciplinary Study Program (February 2004) - Biology for Biophotonics, aimed at bridging physicists, photonics engineering professionals and biomedical scientists to the biological aspects of the biophotonics field.
Vitesse, the University of Toronto and the Ontario Cancer Institute- University Health Network and the International Institute of Optics and Biophotoncis, Saratov State University, Russia, are co-organizing the NATO Advanced Study Institute: Biophotonics - from Fundamental Principles to Health, Environment, Security and Defense Applications (September-October 2004). The Institue will feature over 15 lecturers and 80 students from around the world.
